» Which Integrated Wetland – Watershed Management Project (Ethio
    Wetlands and Natural Resources Association (EWNRA))

Location: The project is located in Which watershed (catchment), Metu Woreda, Illuababora Zone, Oromia Regional State, South Western Ethiopia.

Summary:
Awareness creation to achieve vigorous relationship between people and their environment: Improved farmers’ knowledge through interactive training on the values of healthy ecosystems, natural resource management, agro-forestry practices, compost preparation and hand pump management (technical and hygiene aspects); Familiarized the community with HIV/AIDS prevention , family planning and general health by inviting professionals from nearby health station; Training of GOs and NGOs staff on Environmental Impact Assessment with the purpose of improving local capacity;

Activities to Reduce the pressure on the ecosystem and enhance community participation in wise use (Food Security, Health and Livelihood): Provided revolving fund for profitable activities such as fattening to reduce people marching in to biodiversity rich ecosystems to earn living. Introduced fuel saving stoves;

Improved income generation capacity and diet through promoting vegetable and fruit production; Construction of hand pumps and spring development activities for clean potable water supply; Healthy, happy and strong communities are cooperative and actively participate in ecosystem management!

Activities To Improve Land Productivity And Reduce Agricultural Expansion Into Natural Forests: The uplands and wetland of Wichi are rehabilitated through area closure, afforestation and by biophysical soil and water conservation measures in the watershed, Introduced compost preparation to improve soil fertility, improve yield, reduce expenses for chemical fertilizers and minimize demand for more cultivable land in the forests,

Activities to disseminate experiences: Shared experience to visitors coming from outside the project area, Promoted interactive learning and motivated farmers through organizing field days

 » Operationalzing Policy and Strategic Imperatives of Integrating Population,
    Health and Environment in Ethiopia A community and federal level pilot
    program (LEM Ethiopia)

Location: 12 Kebeles with a population of more than 68,502 in 2 Woredas -Girar Jarso Wereda in N..Shoa Zone , Oromia region and Ensaro Woreda-N.Shoa Zone, Amhara Region

Summary:
Project Objective:-The main objective is to establish a demonstrable pilot that builds on the local knowledge of communities to enhance the capacity for an integrated development using the PHE approach -- that recognizes the interconnections between people and their environment and supports cross-sectoral collaboration and coordination -- with regard to the inter-relationship and inter-dependence between population, health and environment and improve the livelihoods of target communities. The specific objectives are the following:

» To increase the knowledge & skill on the carrying capacity of the resource base of the 12 Kebeles/villages with a view to enhance its population-resource balance through rapid but targeted information collection and analysis through local research by 2011,

» To sensitize target communities and bring attitudinal and behavioral changes on large family size and natural resources management & at the end of the project at least more than 50% of the target communities will be reached through organizing 10 workshops that will involve 315 male & female participants with due attention for female participants by 2011,

» To develop the knowledge and skill of 90 model farmers & extension workers on sustainable use of natural resources, appropriate technologies, family planning, reproductive health, HIV/AIDS and on the role of gender in selection of technologies and health & environment related policies, strategies, conventions & protocols at national and international level by 2011,

» To increase family planning users of women of reproductive age group by 10% through creation of 3 peer groups per Kebele/village for intensive sensitization & through motivating health extension workers by 2011,

» To increase the number of households who apply environmental health protection/hygiene sanitation methods by 10% through intensive environmental health education in school and out off school by 2011,

» To increase the land coverage under conservation by 15% through training, production and plantation of more than 2 million different multipurpose tree seedlings and other conservation activities by 2011,

» To increase the number of households who use energy saving mud stove by 1000 by 2011,

» To increase household income of target communities by 5% through application of different conservation methods that can enhance land productivity and introduction of alternative income generating schemes such as construction of energy saving mud stoves by 2011,

» To share best practices through organizing workshops, symposia, field visit and media coverage, to upscale the good practices nation wide & advocacy - given the improved environment for PHE via PASDEP.

» To serve as experience sharing Centre to the Consortium for the Integration of Population, Health & Environment (CIPHE) & strengthen its influence through experience sharing & networking.
